EMOTIONS – DISGUST

Emotions influence the way we live and interact with others, but if I would ask you to define what are emotions, I believe that it would be hard to express them in words. Emotions have something in common – they all come from inside; from within you.

Let’s take a glance at these emotions: happiness, sadness, fear, disgust, anger and surprise. These emotions can be combined, and the result is different feelings. Emotions are the colour of your life.

Today I am going to talk about DISGUST.

Disgust is another one of the basic human emotions and arises as a feeling of aversion towards something. It is an emotion what we never really give too much attention or thoughts, but it is present in our lives, in one form or another.

We can feel disgusted by something that we perceive with our physical senses, such as sight, smell, touch, sound and taste, or by the actions or appearances of some people, or even ideas. One of the benefits of the feeling of disgust is to keep us away from things potentially dangerous or to keep us healthy and safe.

Disgust is a core survival emotion that makes us want to expel something toxic, dangerous to us, telling us how our environment is/was affecting us.  Those who studied disgust will agree with me, that validating disgust can decrease anxiety and shame from a trauma.

Same as with anger, use the time when you feel disgusted to identify what triggered that feeling and by finding the source you will get to know your emotions and yourself better and better.

I wish you all to learn to know yourself better and better each day, to recognize your basic emotions, work with them, and around them, to use them in/for your benefit, and for keeping a healthy and balanced life, keeping a strong, positive mental health.
